After surviving a pandemic and a major name change, MARKET's Mike Cherman ventures into his first brick and mortar retail concept in his old stomping grounds.
FISH MARKET, a New York City pop-up concept shop that will be located on Broadway and Canal and open from July 20th through the end of the summer.
After the New York showing, the pop-up will travel to MUSINSA, a fashion retail store in South Korea. Following the Korean exhibition, there are plans to open a permanent FISH MARKET shop on LaBrea in Los Angeles, which will be inspired by a Japanese convenience store and also house the brand's offices.
The shop, designed by Sculpture Robotics and led by Gustavo Barroso, is modeled after a fishing and hunting store. It embraces the fun, unexpected tone that MARKET has cultivated over the years. Upon entering, customers are greeted by a whimsical scene - skeletons in ghillie suits, a towering Sasquatch, realistic-looking foam tree trunks, a rock wall, astroturf flooring, and a seating area of stone chairs surrounding an aquarium. Playful images of celebrities like Mike Tyson, Allen Iverson, and Snoop Dogg (the latter an AI rendering) fishing adorn the space.
The Secret Club room pays homage to the brand's bootlegging roots, with a wood-paneled space tagged by renowned graffiti artists like Ozbe/0283, who also created the FISH MARKET logo on the store's front gate. Retail manager Gilberto Soto, a fellow artist, brought this concept to life to honor the neighborhood's rich artistic history. The room features apparel and accessories from the MARKET archives, including a "Born Again Christian Dior" hoodie, as well as new styles like a camo T-shirt riffing on the Balenciaga logo.
Another room showcases MARKET products like mugs and shark plushies, along with a curated selection of second-hand fishing-themed pieces from Fish N Thrift, custom creations from Father Figure, and novelty items from New York-based makers such as ALL CAPS, Look Studio, Only, Frog Radio, IGY NYC, and more.
